The people who have most influenced me have done so by challenging the boundaries of my thinking. My good friend Everett Lupe had a talent for asking questions that led me to see connections between ideas that I otherwise would have never thought of on my own. Our conversations were the basis for my 2010 essay Between Love and Culture, published in Language and Communication, vol.30. Maybe the new ideas is through the recombination of older ones? Or maybe the trick is being friends with smart, insightful people!
